I love birthdays. I think I love them more than most things. Even more so, I love my own birthday. It’s so important to celebrate yourself. On every other day of the year I’m not really into the whole spotlight thing. I’m a fairly chill and laid back kinda gal. But your birthday is the one day of the year that is solely for you.
This is a day to be celebrated in style and I love coming up with a theme and executing it…some might say a little too much! Ultimately though, I just want all of my friends around me and on most years I want to serve them yummy food and entertain in the process.
2016’s party had a very clear vision. I wanted to have everyone over to my condo for food, drinks and dancing. The colors had to represent my girly personality so I stuck with pink, gold, silver and black. This set-up was truly one of my favorites and it was a huge success. All of the planning and prep was so worth it.
Of course, physically having all my loved ones in my tiny condo at the same time is a bit of a challenge. Living in a new condo in Toronto means dealing with a serious lack of space. This party was actually my first gathering after moving in and I was extremely nervous making sure people had enough room to breathe. To curb this, I did re-arrange my furniture a bit by moving my ottoman and TV into my bedroom (no one ever goes into your bedroom so use it as storage if space is an issue). I have a collapsible TV stand which I tucked away. What a space saver that was!
Most important for me was food and set-up (obviously!). If you’re like me and space is of the essence, you want your guests to be able to eat without having to sit down and cut anything. There should be grab and go items that you can pop into your mouth easy-peasy. The last thing you want are for your guests to be held up in line, hungry and waiting to get food (oh the horror!).
So I came up with an appetizer style menu with bite sized, mega flavor packed options! Avocado spring rolls with chipotle lime dip, mini cheesecakes, mini Aish el Saraya (a delectable Lebanese sweet) and BBQ carnitas on black bean cakes just to name a few. They got rave reviews and I’m so excited to share all of them with you guys!
Last but not least, something that really added to this birthday party and has become a staple ever since are props for photo ops. This year, I made pink and red chocolate lip pops for the girls and moustaches for the guys along with party hats.
I can’t tell you how cheap and easy it was. And you can keep the molds forever! The molds, colored chocolate and cake pop sticks can all be purchased at bulk barn, Michael’s or Party City and they were such a hit at this party. It gave everyone something to talk about and lasting memories.
I mean come on, how cute are we??
I’ll be loading up the recipes in the weeks to come and I want to hear how they work for you! I’ve listed the menu and accessories below. Happy celebrating y’all!
